Hello. My name is Javier Ortiz, and I am a project consultant here at Rastrac. Welcome to the first in our new video series, Rastrac Tech Minute. Today, we are going to talk about how Rastrac will help you to improve driver safety.

As you know, with a massive task like managing your organization’s fleet of vehicles, it’s important to find ways to make the job more efficient. However, controlling driver behavior on the job is, traditionally, hit-and-miss at best.

Thankfully, technology provides an easy way to track driver activities and improve your fleet management capabilities. Here are a few ways:

Our software records driver statistics on a turn-by-turn basis monitoring these activities:

  • Start times
  • Rapid acceleration and hard braking
  • Speed
  • Idle time
  • Adherence to routes
  • Turning habits
  • Arrival time for each destination

Reporting all this information tells you a lot about a driver’s skill set and adherence to safety guidelines. It will also show you where a driver could be doing better, giving you an opportunity to improve that driver’s efficiency behind the wheel.

For example, if you notice that a driver is constantly accelerating and then braking too hard, it could signal that they are driving while distracted, among other things. Regardless of the reason you can make them aware of the issue, have them acknowledge the behavior and correct it almost immediately. Not only do you make them better at their job, you make the fleet safer, more fuel efficient and easier to maintain.

The technology also offers in-cab coaching when one of these incidents occurs with an audible alert, which instantly notifies the driver if they speed, harsh break, or accelerate too rapidly. This results in a direct change in the driver’s behavior.

Now you are utilizing a management tool to create better drivers who are less likely to be in an accident. Of course, no accidents means lower insurance premiums.

Overall, GPS fleet management software from Rastrac will make the task of improving driver safety much more efficient. If you would like to explore the possibilities, call me at 512-918-0700 X129.
