The Two Main Types of GPS Tracking Devices
Basically, you have a choice between two categories of fleet GPS tracking devices: cellular or satellite. The differences between the two is how they communicate.
A unit that relies on cellular networks uses the towers provided by such cellular providers as Verizon and T-Mobile. These devices are perfect for assets that will be kept in one particular region, where the signals from cellular towers is strong and steady. However, many devices will be able to store updates and information if they travel where there is not a cellular signal. Once the device is back in the range of coverage, it will send all of the updates that were collected during that time.
A satellite tracking device will communicate directly with satellites for their updates. This is an excellent option for assets that will travel over long distances and go into areas where cellular coverage may be sparse.
The End of 2G Coverage for Cellular Devices
Cellular carriers mostly plan to have 2G coverage terminated soon. Many are already ending the coverage for 2G in certain markets. According to AT&T, all of their 2G services are planned to end by January 1, 2017. While shopping for the right cellular GPS tracking device, make sure that the devices being offered are 3G or HSPA. Hardwired and Battery-Powered GPS Tracking Units
GPS tracking units need to receive power from some source. The devices can either be hardwired into your vehicle or asset, plugged into a vehicle's OBDII port, or rely on batteries for their source of power. Battery operated devices are perfect for assets that are stationary for long periods of time, such as trailers.
